Americas

Machu Picchu, Peru

This secluded ancient city is the only completely survived ruins of once so powerful Inca empire. Prepare a whole day for the trip as getting there and away will take some time, due to the location on the mountains.

There are no lodging in the city, so you have to come back in the evening. A near city Cuzco is a good place to start the excursion.

Opera House, Manaus, Brasilia

The Manaus Opera House is built from the most precious material with extremely good craftsmanship in the middle of the Amazonian rainforest. The area had a boom comparable to California gold rush in the middle of 19th century, when the need for natural rubber was highest. The rubber barons had enough money to import architects, builders and materials and ship them through Amazon.

Gustavia, St. Barthelémy, French West Indies

There are about 7,000 inhabitants in the tiny island of St. Barthelémy, no public transportation nor traffic lights. No traffic jams, either.

Nevertheless, the capital of the island, Gustavia, has twenty or so luxury fashion and jewelry shops. The duty free status is an extra bonus. Furthermore, all this is combined with Caribbean sunshine, nice people, hot temperatures and white sand beaches.

CN Tower, Toronto, Canada

CN Tower is the highest building in the world with height of 553.33m. The tower has two reasons for existence: to act as a telecommunication hub and to give travellers something exotic to do while in Toronto. There are several decks in the tower open for tourists. At 342 m is a deck with glass floor and outdoor observation possibilities. Near the top, at 447 m, is another deck, Sky Pod, that is also the world’s highest public observation deck.

Guggenheim Museum, New York, USA

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, or Guggenheim for short, boasts with one of the most comprehensive collection of modern art. The museum was established in 1939 and had grown since to be a multi-museum chain in two continents, North America and Europe. To study the Guggenheim collections, start with New York, then visit Bilbao, Berlin, Venice and Las Vegas.

The New York museum building is a sight itself, designed by the controversial architect Frank Lloyd Wright and opened in 1959. The building shattered existing notions of what a museum could be. Instead of having separate rooms after each other, the museum has an ascending spiral space as the heart and a few exhibition rooms, all filled with masterpieces of modern art.

Shoal Bay East, Anguilla, British West Indies

Beach aficiniados say that Shoal Bay East is the best beach in Caribbean. The sand is white; the water is turquoise and calm. The beach has not been – at least yet – spoiled with huge resorts or hotels. There are just enough cafes and bars to prevent dehydration and to enjoy local dishes. Shades and other beach stuff is available for renting, too. Remember to bring enough sunscreen.
