Thingvellir – Location of the ancient parliament
Thingvellir national park is the place where the old parliament, the very first in Nordic countries, assembled when Icelanders ruled Iceland — before rule of Danish.
The national park is sitting on top of two tectonic plates, European and American. These two continents are slowly drifting apart and the ground splits in Thingvellir. You can see huge basalt rock formations due to this movement.

There are a couple of cafes and tourist information spots around the park.
If you are driving by yourself, ask a map. Icelandic roads don’t have too many signs…
