Shopping, Oulu, Finland (reviewed March, 2005)

Vima: – Trendy clothes

Vima: sells fashionable clothes for both ladies and gentlemen in the center of Oulu. The store is conveniently located on Rotuaari, just next to Stockmann. In fact, you can walk from Vima: to Stockmann without even noticing that you have moved from a store to another. Just remember to pay your purchases first…

The first floor has men fashion and shoes, the second floor is for ladies, the third has Benetton and Sisley shop-in-shop and the fourth floor hosts a cafe.

Vima:

The garments are designated mostly for young urban people, but you can find the basic suits and other paraphelia there, too. The prices are normal Finnish street prices, so no bargains can usually be found.

I’m taking an extended trip to Finland and would like dress appropriately. I need to see examples of how the locals dress. I have a seven year old son as well. We need style advice because we don’t want to look like tourists.

Blanca, in general Finnish people dress like everybody else in the Western world — with and without style :). I would suggest bringing a set of smart casual clothes that can be mixed to achieve different dresses. The smartness factor depends heavily on your planned activities.

For a moment, I’m assuming that you are from the States: anything from GAP, Banana Republic, Abercombie & Fitch, Club Monaco, Ann Taylor and others similar brands will do. Of course, H&M, Zara and other European fashion chains have almost the same stuff.

However, there are certain things that will set you apart from a typical Finn, so avoid these if you don’t want to look like a tourist or a foreigner:

  • white sneakers — Americans
  • university shirts (or similar), especially when combined with shorts and waist bag (that should be a no-no everywhere) — Americans
  • very high heeled shoes — Russians, or eastern Europe in general

If you are planning some activities, such as hikes or river drafting, have a good parka and trousers made of Goretex or some other wind and water stopping material.

Hopefully this helps.
